If God Brings You to It ...

      By Fern Horst

"If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it."

It seems no one knows for sure where this quote originated, but it has appeared in many blogs, in emails forwarded from one friend to another, in sermons and inspirational speeches. It is indeed an encouraging and comforting statement.

But is it true? The litmus test for this and for any assertion of alleged truth is God's Word, the Bible. As we look within its pages, we find these verses that do attest to the truthfulness of the above quote:

"Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it." (I Thessalonians 5:24)

"There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." (I Corinthians 10:13)

"Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen." (Hebrews 13:20-21)

"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." (Philippians 1:6)

"Count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing." (James 1:2-4)

"We glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us." (Romans 5:3-5)

The wonderful truth of these verses is that they go beyond what is included in the proclamation, "If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it." God has not only promised to bring us through those things which He Himself brings into our lives, but also those things which come into our lives by means of living in a sinful and fallen world: temptation, natural disasters, wrongs committed against us or someone we love, illness, war, divorce, death of a loved one.

God's Word gives us confidence that no matter what we face, nor why we face it, God is there to walk with us through it. He has promised us the strength and the grace to do what is right when faced with unspeakable pressure. And the most wonderful thing is that He has promised that we will emerge victorious - not only having survived, but having grown in character and Christlikeness, and having become better equipped for what He has for us.

So, no matter what the difficulty we face, when we think we can't face another day of not feeling well, of going to a job we hate, of dealing with all the downsides of living without a spouse, of trying to forgive those who have wronged us, we can open our Bibles and gain confidence that "all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28).
